We will be tasting styles that have been mastered on either coast and tasting two versions of each. The west coast, of course, is know for it's extremely hoppy india pale ales, and the east coast is home to many adventurous breweries that are not afraid to experiment with classic European beer styles.
East Coast: Clipper City (Baltimore, MD) 'Red Sky at Night' Belgian Style Saison Ale A great sasion with an awesome fruit character, too many people do not know about this beer and are missing out on some delicious drinking. This beer is spicy and complex, and extremely refreshing. Also, this beer is a perfect example of an American brewery taking a European style and making it it's own. Coming in at 7.5% alcohol, this is definitely not the type of Saison you would find in Belgium.
Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY, 'Sorachi Ace' Classic Saison This dry, golden Saison features an extremely rare hops known as the Sorachi Ace, which is now only grown in one farm in the world (in Oregon). This beer has a great malt flavor with a little lemon zest, it's a perfect summer beer, and it is one of the only beers of it's kind.
West Coast: Lagunitas (Petaluma, CA) 'Maximus' American Double / Imperial IPA This Double IPA has a huge hops profile, which is to be expected of a west coast beer. Delicious grapefruit comes through on this beer, it is definitely a hop-heads delight.
Green Flash (San Diego, CA) 'West Coast' IPA This beer contains a huge variety of hops that really show off the characteristics different hops can add to beer. Furthermore, Green Flash has expertly mixed all of these hops together so you can enjoy each one without being overwhelmed by any one of them, all at the same time. There are elements of fruit, pine, citrus, and floral aromas in this beer; not for the weak of pallette or weak of heart.
