Wine Advocate 89 points - The 2005 Coto de Imaz Reserva is predominantly Tempranillo with a dollop of Graciano aged for 18 months in American oak. Dark ruby red with a fragrant nose of cedar, rose petal, cherry, and cassis that jumps from the glass, on the palate it displays an elegant personality, good concentration, savory flavors, and enough structure to evolve for several years. It should be at its best from 2012 to 2020. ” (Apr 2010)
This was a favorite for our tasters and I can see why. Deep garnet color. Complex aromas of smoky oak, plum, black cherry, cedar, coconut, vanilla, leather, tobacco, and mocha. On the palate the plum fruit and oak tones predominate. The texture is very supple with resolved tannins. This is classic Rioja with its plummy, oaky character. I expect that this will drink well for the next ten years without much additional development, but who needs it. This is delicious and complex already.
