Deep gold color, with a faint green tint. An open-plus nose; ripe apple/peach/pear aroma is sweet and luscious, with plenty of freshness, and a vanilla creme background. Pretty notes of citrus, floral, and butterscotch add to the pleasure. Lovely! The mouth shows more of all the things that were hinted at in the nose, with a nice blend of the tree fruits, the vanilla seeming richer in tone, and the butterscotch seeming more buttery. The citrus hints at orange hard-candy, and there's good clean mineral in the finish. Delicious! Good body, farily sweet, smooth and creamy, nicely balanecd, with modest-plus acidity.
Monbazillac is just east of Bordeaux, and not far from the Entre-deux-Mers region. Interestingly, this wine is made from a similar mix of the grapes that the quite dry Chateau Nicot was made of (50% Semillon/40% Sauvignon/10% Muscadelle). A lovely sipping wine, and a fine accompaniment to fine not-too-sweet desserts. |
