We attend a steady stream of trade tastings, most of them featuring hundreds of wines from all around the globe. (It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it.) It takes a special wine to make an impression at these sorts of events. Often the wine that will get us industry types to sit up and take notice is an artisan-crafted product from a highly specific site, made in teensy quantities and selling for a tidy sum.
Recently, though, it was this humble Bonarda from Argentina that really wowed us. Produced by the folks at Las Hormigos from 30-year-old vines, this wine is completely delicious. Packed with palate-coating flavors of black raspberries, cassis, chocolate and spice, it's generous and balanced.
But what really turned our heads was the price. The Colonia Las Liebres is a stunning value even among the plethora of bargain wines emanating from South America. We wouldn't be surprised if Bonarda attained a similar status in Argentina to Malbec, which migrated from France to become a sort of signature grape variety in its adopted country. (Bonarda is native to Italy.)
This full-bodied wine is bound to warm you up while there's still a nip in the air, but it's going to be great with summer barbeque, too -- so stock up while it's on sale.
