On Sale $10.75 White Burgundy means Chardonnay, right? Sure – unless you’re in Saint-Bris. Located southwest of Chablis, the limestone soils of Saint-Bris comprise the only AOC in Burgundy that is allowed to make wines from Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Somewhat reminiscent of Sancerre, but a lot more wallet-friendly, Saint Bris embodies the crisp stony minerality you’d expect from its proximity to Chablis.
Burgundy superstar Jean Marc Brocard brings his consistently exemplary care and craftsmanship to the 2006 Domaine Sainte Claire Saint-Bris. Bright grapefruit and lemon are balanced with lots of wet stone and a subtle hint of rosemary on the finish. This is a bone-dry, refreshing white that’s perfect for oysters, mussels, or broiled trout.

Light gold with a very pale green accent. A generous nose; ripe apple and citrus aroma shows distinct Sauvignon character, with a little lemon/lime, good floral notes, just a whisper of smoke, and nice clean mineral. Very good! The mouth shows more intensity and concentration, while still being light and bright on the palate. It seems to get more intense and smoky (roasted bell pepper...) as I hold it in the mouth. Medium-good body, some richness, round, dry, with modest-plus acidity.
As it had on my Wednesday sampling, this has lots of forthright intensity and complex attractive flavors, but this bottle seems slightly lower in acidity. It was widely liked by our tasters. |
